Welcome to N.Y.I.D.E. Teacher Training. This program is rapidly
redefining the impact of performing arts based education!
Course Description:
This highly interactive dance program is created as a model for the International Dance Education Initiative, and has been specifically designed to prepare participants to be effective members of the dance and performing arts professions. This goal is achieved by excelling at three primary objectives or areas.
1) Dance Performance
2) Dance Education
3) Business Administration and Design for the Arts.
The course is interwoven with the syllabus I and II dance programs at the New York Institute of Dance and Education, providing the unique opportunity for candidates to apply the theories from their course study into their continuing work.
Objective 1 (Dance Performance) includes but is not limited to: studying dance from the perspective of the performer, with opportunities to perform in various mediums. Study will include: ballet, modern, jazz, tap, ethnic, and Understanding Composition I. The pursuit of excellence in this area will allow for better understanding and success in the other objectives.
Objective 2 (Dance Education) is based in New York Institute’s philosophy that successful teaching requires paying equal attention to the body, mind and heart of every student. In this methodology, candidates will do detailed course study in the discipline (or the fine art) of teaching. The course will introduce first the principals of teaching fine arts dance and then move on to more complicated applications including adjustments and corrections. Study will include teaching: ballet, modern, jazz, and tap. Teaching from this perspective requires commitment to constant learning, and personal and professional development on the part of the aspiring dance educator.
Objective 3 (Business Administration and Design for the Arts) uses the New York Institute of Dance and Education as a class room in Business Administration. Here the candidate will see programming and projects from conception to completion. They will see how only good business practices allow for corporations or arts programming to flourish. They will slowly get to learn tools and execute methods that assure an idea becomes a profitable product, and learn how to design the packaging that is necessary to sell that product.
Using an array of classes, hands-on teaching and well planned facilitated discussions participants in the course will have the opportunity to work with Institute faculty and staff to:
• Learn about and experience an array of new ideas for teaching technique and movement to students.
• Learn about dance class design and how to make class more exciting and interesting to students.
• Better understand stages of youth development and how it relates to teaching young dancers.
• Explore issues for dance educators including but not limited to:
- inspiring students to move on
- letting go
- working with the parent, educator, student partnership
- helping students prepare for dance futures
- running a successful dance education business
• Develop a written action plan focused on applying new learning from the course of your daily work with dance students.
