New York Dance Festival's Brenna McLaud

On Wednesday, July 16, 2008, Senator Michael Nozzolio will present the International Stage Dance Concert and the Carmen De Lavallade Awards as “Senator Michael Nozzolio Night at the 2008 New York Dance Festival,” at the famed Smith Opera House in Geneva, NY.

This evening features some of the nation's established and emerging dance troupes, ensembles and companies.  This powerful and electric dance concert will feature many different styles of dance, music and drumming by world-class personalities.  The evening includes everything from classical ballet, to African dance, modern dance, tap dance and even breathtaking cultural and ethnic dance, and is a great crowd pleaser!  What's more, it's also an opportunity for emerging dance schools, choreographers and dance companies to participate with the world's best in an easy and inviting event.

Written upon the sealed DeLavallade Award document: The DeLavallade Award is named after the incomparable Carmen DeLavallade, to honor her immeasurable contribution to dance and to the personal development of all, and people of color. Her artistry and humanity, like yours, has inspired generations of dancers and non-dancers alike; and for each of them, provided a guiding light that supported dreams. For your dedication to the fine art of Dance, you are being awarded the DeLavallade Award for Dance, the highest symbol of recognition for achievement awarded by the New York Dance Festival. You have demonstrated a remarkable ability as an innovative, creative force in the world of dance, and have utilized your abilities to bring hope, life, and inspiration into the hearts of people the world over. Your pioneering and continuing leadership in the fine arts dance world has left a significant mark on the world community, to one and all, regardless of age, color, or creed.

Patricia and Carol truly embody the spirit of this award.

The 2007 concert featured companies from across the U.S. including the raw hip hop power of NYC's GPR Entertainment, Philadelphia's Pointe Studio, Syracuse's LaFamillia De La Salsa, 2007 Choreographic Resident-NYC's Emily Vetsch, 2007 NYDF Artistic Fellows Brenna McLaud of Vancouver, British Columbia, Philadelphia's Chauntee Andrews, and New York City's Tina Thompson Dance Theate. Additional performances by 2007 Janet Collins Fellowship winners, Jerami Kipp and Dia Dearstyne, Matthew Clark and the critically acclaimed Kaleidoscope Dance Theatre. Other acts include repertory from artists and choreographers from Delaware, Denver, across upstate New York, and New York City.

To conclude the evening, we presented the 2007 DeLavallade Awards for Dance, the highest awards given by the New York Dance Festival, to the dance world's major icons, Carol Walker, Dean of the Dance Conservatory at Purchase, and Patricia N. Nanon, founder of The Yard. We honor these exceptional artists with the DeLavallade Award for Dance, as their vision, professionalism, dedication, and insight for keeping dance on the cutting edge of performance art has spanned many decades. Their influence has touched countless dancers and performing artists, young and old, and their impact on the dance world has surely left its mark. Congratulations to both Carol and Patricia!
